Changes in our lives are certainly inevitable, whether it be the seasons of Mother Nature or the seasons of Life. When we are at our best and most resilient selves, we are definitely more open to the idea of change. Yet, especially when we are somewhat stressed or overwhelmed, even positive changes can seem daunting.
Why?
1. Even positive changes move us into new and unknown territory. It is easier, though not as exciting, to stay within our comfort zone.
2. A perceived loss of control of the situation. We all feel safer if we have a locus of control and so change, especially if it’s unexpected, may meet some psychological resistance.
3. A belief that the change may be difficult.
4. Concern we are not ready or prepared for the change. Some self doubt about whether we are up to it.
5. Sometimes we just don’t want the change! We may feel frustrated or even annoyed when forced to make a change at work or home when it is not desired.
Change is not only inevitable, it is also an opportunity for growth and renewal. Stepping outside our comfort zone can be challenging and there are ways to embrace it and experience the many developments.
1. Control the Change rather than have it control you. We can’t always control the events and people in our life, we can always choose how we respond. Dive in, self reflect and make deliberate choices. As an old quote says, “Be part of the solution instead of the problem”.
2. Be Positive. Remind yourself of potential positive outcomes of the change in front of you. This can be difficult when dealing with an unwanted or sad situation. Attempt to hold balanced thoughts of both the negative and also positive sides. Imagine a life without any changes? Most are super positive in the end.
3. Press Pause. Take a little bit of time to self reflect to understand why you are feeling the way you are? What is the change triggering for you? What do you need to help in this situation? Self-awareness is power.
4. Have Faith. Though there isn’t always a way out, there is always a way through. Remember all of the changes you have already navigated in your life. What were the strengths and skills utilized in the past? Believe in yourself and trust the flow of life.
5. Take Really Good Care of YOU! Self-care is our oxygen on any given day, but, especially during life changes. Proper sleep, exercise, journaling, laughter, time with loved ones, setting boundaries are just a few of the essential tools to be optimally resilient.
You have the power,
Best, Sherry
